Small Landscape Elements Map
The small landscape elements map highlights the fine-grained structures that give the study area much of its local character. These elements are especially important because they connect the larger land use units: tree rows structure the Zenne valley, solitary trees punctuate the open pastures, and ditches and small water features help organise drainage in the lower-lying parts of the study area. Along roads and field edges, hedges, fences, verges and tree lines also create visual boundaries that shape how open or enclosed each landscape type feels.
The mapped small landscape elements show that the study area is not only structured by large elements such as fields, forests and infrastructure, but also by smaller landscape features that function as ecological links and visual markers. This is particularly clear in the lower parts of the study area, where tree rows, ditches and isolated trees create variations in otherwise open terrain. Higher up, hedges, garden boundaries and orchard-related elements contribute to a more enclosed and private landscape character.
